TRANSFER TRACKER STATUS:Â Signing
Atlanta United have acquired striker Breel Embolo from French Ligue 1 side Stade Rennais, the club announced Sunday.
The 29-year-old Switzerland international joins for one of the largest transfer fees in MLS history (reportedly around $18 million). He is under contract through the 2029-30 MLS season and will occupy a Designated Player roster spot.
Embolo arrives shortly after Atlanta loaned DP striker Emmanuel Latte Lath to German Bundesliga side Union Berlin.Â
"We’re pleased to bring a player with Breel’s combination of talent and experience at the highest levels of world soccer to Atlanta United," said Chris Henderson, the club's chief soccer officer and sporting director.
"At age 29, he’s coming off a strong performance at the World Cup with Switzerland and has a proven track record of goal contributions in multiple top European leagues.
"His goal-scoring, ability to link with other players in the attack and tireless work rate are qualities that will strengthen our team from the center forward position."
Prolific striker
Embolo has tallied 100g/66a in 380 professional matches during a decade-plus career in Europe, beginning with boyhood club FC Basel in the Swiss Super League. He's also featured for Schalke 04 and Borussia Mönchengladbach in Germany, as well as French sides AS Monaco and Rennes.
Embolo has scored 26 goals in 92 appearances for Switzerland, including 2g/2a during their quarterfinal run at the 2026 World Cup. He's played at three World Cups and three UEFA European Championships.
Late-season push
Embolo will look to provide an attacking boost for an Atlanta side that's scored an Eastern Conference-low 23 goals this season.
The Five Stripes are 15th in the Eastern Conference with 18 points, trailing the Audi MLS Cup Playoffs field.
